Benefits of Following a Mediterranean Diet During Pregnancy

By.  Robert j. Maatthews

The Mediterranean diet is a way of eating that has been linked to better fertility and pregnancy results.

New research suggests that eating a Mediterranean diet before and during pregnancy can lower the chances of experiencing complications like preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.

The study looked at more than 7000 pregnant women. It found that women who followed the Mediterranean diet had a lower risk of problems during pregnancy.

This included a 21% lower risk of preterm birth, a 28% lower risk of preeclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy), and a 37% lower risk of gestational diabetes.

This study agrees with previous research on the Mediterranean diet's effects on pregnancy, particularly in reducing the risk of gestational diabetes.

One study found that eating a Mediterranean diet, along with having extra virgin olive oil and nuts every day, is linked to a 35% lower chance of getting gestational diabetes.

The Mediterranean diet is also linked to better fertility results, improved quality of eggs and sperm, and benefits for those going through IVF treatment.
